Dorothy Moss New National Alumni Association President
Greetings, Fellow Alumni! It is an honor and a privilege for me to serve as your National Alumni Association President. Thank you all for your support. Let me tell you a little about myself.
Born 11th of 12 children to sharecropping parents, Minnie and George Ruffin of Tarboro, N.C., I moved to Brooklyn, NY to live with an aunt at the age of seven, immediately following the death of my mother. After a year or so, I moved back with my father who had relocated to Norfolk, VA. I later moved to Fort Valley, GA to live with my sister, Minnie Ruffin, who was a Research Scientist in the Agriculture Division at Fort Valley State University. Thus I received K-12 education in North Carolina, New York, Virginia, and Fort Valley, GA, graduating from Peach County High School in May 1974.
In the fall of 1974, I entered FVSU where I spent four of the best years of my life. I matriculated in Agriculture, receiving the B.S. Degree in Horticulture in 1978. Upon graduation, I entered graduate school at Iowa State University, where I received the M.S. Degree in Horticulture three years later.
Just prior to graduation from ISU, I married FVSU Alum Leon Moss of Warrenton, GA, who received his M.S. Degree from ISU in Animal Science. We are the proud parents of two daughters, Tamara and Candace. Tamara is married to Saleem Bankhead and both of them are employed as biologists in Richmond, VA; and Candace is enrolled in the Harvard Law School. We also have a granddaughter, Saleena and a grandson, Donovan.
For several years, I was employed as a Pension Administrator of 401(k) plans in Des Moines, IA and Richmond, VA until becoming the CEO of my own T-shirt business with my husband in Richmond; we continue to own this business that I have managed since 1993. Upon relocation to Conyers, I became a charter member of the Phi Omicron Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., in which I serve as 2nd Vice President. In the fall of 2008, I joined the Springfield Baptist Church, where Eric Wendel Lee is the Pastor.
My husband and I have been strong supporters of the FVSU Alumni Association ever since we graduated. In the past, we were also members of the Washington, DC local Alumni Chapter for two years. Currently we are members of the DeKalb County local Alumni Chapter, as well as Life Members of the National Alumni Association.
Fellow Alumni, we have great opportunities ahead of us to meet the many challenges we face. We will meet these challenges head-on as we make our beloved university shine, with our commitment to hard work, excellence, and professionalism.
Some of my goals as your National Alumni Association President include:
Here’s hoping that we can all work together to make our alma mater the best it can be. If you have questions or ideas you would like to share, please feel free to contact me by phone at (770) 602-3060 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org .
